Driver Progression at PPS: Cameron’s Journey from Delivery Driver to Class 1

Home / Driver Progression at PPS: Cameron’s Journey from Delivery Driver to Class 1

At PPS we talk a lot about driver progression, but the best proof is always a real story. Cameron Bills is one of them.

Starting out on deliveries

Cameron joined PPS as a delivery driver on our Amazon operation at Baillieston, out on the road every day delivering parcels across Glasgow and the surrounding area. It is a demanding job, and it is also one of the best groundings in logistics there is. You learn routes, timekeeping and the discipline of getting every parcel where it needs to be, when it needs to be there.

Plenty of drivers are happy to build a career at that level. Cameron had his sights set further.

Making the move to Class 2

PPS regularly puts drivers through their licences, but at the time there were no openings on that route, so Cameron went out and gained his Class 2 (Cat C) licence off his own back. Then, when a role came up on the Palletways side of the business, he applied and earned his place on our Class 2 team, driving 18 tonners on pallet distribution work across our network.

It was a step up in vehicle, responsibility and earnings, and Cameron took it in his stride.

Stepping up to Class 1

Around a year later, Cameron pushed on again and obtained his Class 1 (Cat C+E) licence. He now works nights as a Class 1 driver, running trunk work that keeps freight moving through the Palletways network while most of the country is asleep.

Night trunk work sits at the top end of driver earnings, and Cameron has gone from delivery driver to one of the higher earners in our driving team in a remarkably short space of time.

A word from the top

It is great to see people come into our business and want to commit to the company and their own progression. Cameron is a perfect example of that and fits in well with the culture of what we are trying to build at PPS Logistics. We want Cameron to be part of the long-term success and story of PPS Logistics, where I am sure there will be more opportunities to progress as we deliver on our growth plans and ambitions. We are hiring for the right people, not purely the skillset they have at the time. Attitude is everything for us and we want a company filled with good people who are like-minded. – Andrew Muir, Managing Director, PPS Logistics.

Driver progression at PPS

Cameron’s route is one we want more drivers to follow, and in most cases you will not even need to fund the licences yourself. We regularly put our own drivers through their Class 2 and Class 1, because we would rather grow our own than always hire from outside. Show up, do the job well and make it known you want to progress, and there is a clear path here from delivery work through Class 2 and on to Class 1. The vehicles get bigger and the pay packet grows with you.

We run pallet distribution operations from our depots in Kilmarnock, Cumbernauld and Glasgow, and we are always interested in hearing from drivers at every stage of that journey, whether you are on multi-drop today or already hold your Class 1.

Thinking about your next step? Take a look at our current driver vacancies or get in touch with our recruitment team. Cameron did, and it changed his career.
